I'm having trouble loading any Wikimedia sites from here in the UK. Anyone know what the problem is and what the best status page to check is? I've found these ones so far: http://ezyang.com/wikistatus/ http://www.downornot.com/en.wikipedia.org Carcharoth

downornot.com is hosted in the US; readers in the UK access the Amsterdam squids (AFAIK). So that wouldn't help. Is there an official but non-WMF-hosted status site? - d.

You can try tracerouting it. In Windows XP: * Start * Run * "cmd" * "tracert www.wikipedia.org" and that will tell you where your connection is dying. For example this what the traceroute may return:

I may try that. But if it helps, the bit it seems to keep getting stuck on is where the browser says: "waiting for bits.wikimedia.org" I've Googled that and some information is coming up, but not much that I understand. Carcharoth

I'd suspect it's your ISP. Do the traceroute and email it to your ISP tech support. I did this, and if I'm understanding it right it took 19 "hops". The first one looks like my cable modem, the second one I don't recognise at all(!), the next eight are my ISP, the eleventh is from an IP in the Netherlands, the twelfth is "knams.wikimedia.org", the thirteenth is "esams.wikimedia.org", and then it timed out five times, and then it completed the trace on hop 19 at the prompted destination of bits.esams.wikimedia.org. This is really useful for visualising how internet traffic works! :-) But my connection is still not working. :-( I may try hassling my ISP, or I may just go shopping. Carcharoth

Are you having difficulty accessing any other sites? Wikipedia is working perfectly for me (in the UK), so it's very unlikely to be a problem with Wikipedia. The problem must be at your end. bits.wikimedia.org is where things like the CSS come from. Try en.wikipedia.org - that's the actual domain you need to be able to access.

When I try and access en.wikipedia.org, it hangs when it tries to load the CSS things from bits.wikimedia.org (if I wait long enough, it loads a stripped-down version of the site). I should add, en:wp is working fine for me in the UK, so it's up and Amsterdam is up :-) Traceroute (tracert in Windows) will indeed give the correct answer. I prefer just to directly look at what the servers are up to: http://ganglia.wikimedia.org/ It's only a broad overview of course and doesn't catch everything but if there are a bunch of peaks where there shouldn't be that generally suggests the problem is as wikimedia's end. -- geni
