Hey there. To those of you that are American, happy Thanksgiving! To those of you that are not American, happy "Why can't I reach any of the the Americans today, and what's with all this talk of stuffing? day!". So a while back when Denny gave a talk in Boston about Wikidata, he mentioned that he didn't want bots running until after the new API hit and we had a chance to make sure that nothing was broken. I reposted that on the project chat and we all agreed to stop the bots. That was on November 13. Today I wake up to find that there is a bot running, and another to-be-bot-op is asking if he can run his too. Does anyone know if the new API has hit? Denny had no idea when it would. If it has, and nothing is on fire, does anyone have any other objections to running bots again? On a final note, I would ask that the bots stop running at Q99900 and resume once we're at Q100001, as Denny did make a point to me in private that day that I agree with, that it's great for the milestones in projects (and Q100000 is a big one) to be reached by humans and not bots. Donno if that's possible to program in though. Gosh, I remember creating things with four digits after the Q. I'm feeling old. :D Sven

On a final note, I would ask that the bots stop running at Q99900 and resume once we're at Q100001, as Denny did make a point to me in private that day that I agree with, that it's great for the milestones in projects (and Q100000 is a big one) to be reached by humans and not bots. Donno if that's possible to program in though. Gosh, I remember creating things with four digits after the Q. I'm feeling old. :D

Nice idea, maybe a well-targeted block for bots? :-))) It is up to the community: it is possible to ask them to stop at 99800 and block for a while at 99900 if they forget to stop. With a comment that won't be too ugly in their log.

No it has not. Technically you can run bots. Just don't got too crazy with them :)

There is no technical reason at the moment to not run bots. Beyond that it's not the staff's call to make. server) !

Not contradictory, merely confusing :) Whether you should, is the communities decision. I was merely mentioning that I would be happy if there was a bit to do for humans still, because they write better bug reports. On the other hand, considering we already have over 100k items, it is probably safe to say that there won't be that much to do for humans anyway with regard to creating items for sitelinks, so I guess, if the community so decided, it should be free to start the bots fully. There will be still sufficiently stuff to do in creating labels and descriptions, and cleaning up the sitelinks which are more complex. I expect that http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Report_interwiki_conflictsis going to become much more lively :) I hope this is clearer now. Basically, what I am saying is:

From the development teams point of view, we regard the decision whether to

use bots or not to be completely with the community. We don't have any concerns anymore about running bots. Heh I think that's something you need to figure out with the people running the bots.

I added some code that causes my bot to pause if it creates an item with (itemid modular 50000 > 49950). Because of a pipe that i use there can be up to five edits after this condition is hit. It just successfully tested it the the 95000 mark which will be hit in some minutes and i hope my bot will start after it immediately. Different to my other code this rule is specific to wbsetitem, because itemid format will change after update and i don't think that wbeditentity will be enabled until tomorrow. Merlissimo
