Hello all,
-and sorry for cross-posting-
This message is important to everyone running an instance of Wikibase
including the Query Service GUI.
We just released a new version of the Wikidata Query Service GUI. This
release is primarily to fix a security issue described in T233213
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T233213> (hidden task, will be made
public soon). The fix has been successfully deployed for the Wikidata Query
Service.
In order to keep your instance safe, please make sure to update your Query
Service GUI!
Git repositories, releases and currently active version docker images also
include the latest fixed code (see links below). If you have a local test
setup using the docker-compose example then see:

Reminder: Technical Advice IRC meeting this week **Wednesday 4-5 pm UTC**
on #wikimedia-tech.
*Note the time change due to Berlin having switched to winter time!*
Questions can be asked in English.
The Technical Advice IRC Meeting (TAIM) is a weekly support event for
volunteer developers. This week we have a special theme, related to the
upcoming Wikimedia Technical Conference focusing on Developer Productivity.
In particular we're interested in hearing about your experiences with
developer productivity in the context of your work with on-wiki tools
(gadgets, templates, modules, etc). Your input is going to be useful for
the "Developer Productivity & onwiki tooling" (
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T234661) session held at the Conference
next week.
Hope to see you there!

(sorry for cross-posting!)
Hello all,
We’re running a session at next week’s Wikimedia Technical Conference
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Technical_Conference/2019> around
the topic: Developer Productivity and onwiki tooling - userscripts,
gadgets, templates, modules <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T234661>.
For this we’re looking for more input from folks who won’t be at the
conference.
The goal of the conference is to identify changes to tooling and processes
to support Wikimedia developers in working more efficiently. One aspect of
that is to explore what makes it currently difficult for technical
contributors working with templates, modules, userscripts and gadgets, and
to discuss what could be improved or done differently.
It would be wonderful if you could share your experience and comment on the
following 2 questions in the phabricator ticket for the session
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T234661> (or send me an email, and we’ll
add it to the phabricator ticket):
1.
What is your background, what do you do as a technical contributor?
2.
In what way your productivity as a technical contributor is affected in
the context of on-wiki tooling (what slows you down, what makes your life
complicated, what helps you …)?
To give you two examples (made-up):
1.
I am a volunteer developer and have developed several user scripts for
frwiki.
2.
When I’ve developed a userscript, I don’t know how many people are
copying the code to use my script. When I make changes to the script,
others often still have older versions. When people report bugs, I need to
first find out which version they are using which is very time-consuming.
1.
I am a developer of Wikibase extension, WMDE staff member
2.
When I develop a new feature in Wikibase, I am often informed AFTER the
feature has been released that Wikidata gadgets had been broken. Then I
need to stop my current tasks, go back to my previous work and change the
feature. This makes the process of my work on new features longer.
Many thanks for your support!
The developer productivity and onwiki tooling session crew

Hello all,
As you know, Lydia and i regularly organize Wikidata office hours, an
online meeting where we're presenting an update from the development team,
what we're working on at the moment, people can ask questions.
The next one will take place on Tuesday, *November 5th* at 18:00 Berlin
time (UTC+1)
<https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?msg=Wikidata+Telegram…>
on the *the Wikidata Telegram channel
<https://t.me/joinchat/AZriqUj5Uag92TB4U9eBdQ>*.
<https://t.me/joinchat/AZriqUj5Uag92TB4U9eBdQ>
The previous meetings happened on IRC, and the content is later transferred
onwiki. You can see the archives here
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Events/archive#Past_office_hours>.
Since we noticed that over the past year, more and more activity takes
place on the Telegram channel, and less on IRC, we decided to make an
experiment and run the office hour on Telegram for the first time. As
usual, the notes of the meeting will be published on wiki, so everyone can
access them.
Depending on how it works for us and for you, we may decide to continue the
experiment, to go back to IRC, or even to find another tool for such an
interactive meeting (I also plan to look at the tools that Wikimedia Space
<https://space.wmflabs.org/> is offering). I hope you won't mind us trying
new things :)
If you have any question or remark, feel free to reach out to me.
Cheers,

1. Call for Workshops
*******************************************
Co-located workshops at the ESWC conferences are essential meeting points for discussing ongoing work and current results, as well as shaping new ideas and research fields. We particularly invite workshop proposals looking at Semantic Web related topics from an interdisciplinary standpoint, proposals focussing on novel aspects of the Semantic Web and Web of Data, and proposals aiming at gathering existing and forming new sub-communities. We encourage the submission of workshop proposals on:
* Fundamental technical and theoretical problems of the Semantic Web / Linked Data and Knowledge Graphs
* Applications of Semantic Web technologies in domains such as Mobility and Smart Cities, Life Sciences, Industry 4.0, Earth Science, Digital Humanities, Law, Media, etc.
* Key enabling technologies and their adaptation to the needs of the Semantic Web
* Aspects of Semantic Web research that have been neglected or underrepresented so far
* Techniques and methods from other research fields that are of relevance for Semantic Web research (e.g., artificial intelligence, databases, NLP, big data analytics, machine learning, human computer interaction, information retrieval, web science, etc.)
* New emerging topics and areas
In particular, we also encourage the submission of workshops that do not follow the typical workshop format of a mini-conference.

2. Call for Tutorials
*******************************************
ESWC 2020 invites tutorials that address the interests of its varied audience: people new to the Semantic Web, Semantic Web researchers and practitioners that wish to learn new technologies, users of Semantic Web technologies, and representatives of government and funding agencies as well as potential private investors in Semantic Web technologies. We welcome submissions of tutorial proposals on all major topics related to semantic technologies.
We especially solicit proposals for tutorials of the following types:
* Tutorials with a coherent theme providing an introduction to new semantic technologies, methods, techniques, and trends (e.g. Knowledge Graphs, semantic data integration, reasoning, question answering, ontology-based data access, ontology design principles, provenance and trust, etc.).
* Tutorials describing the application of semantic technologies in specific domains (e.g., life sciences, e-government, e-commerce, Industry 4.0, cultural heritage, education, mobile, music).
* Tutorials presenting techniques from other fields that are of relevance for Semantic Web research, including social sciences, digital humanities, biomedical research, HCI, Information Retrieval, databases, NLP, Internet of Things, data visualization, etc.
While tutorials may focus on theoretical topics, we encourage organizers to incorporate hands-on sessions. The tutorial should reach a good balance between the topic coverage and its relevance to the community.
Tutorials can be half-day or full-day.
We suggest having up to two presenters for half-day and up to four presenters for full-day tutorials, preferably from different institutions, contributing different perspectives to the tutorial topic.

Hello
The ISSN International Center, which maintains the ISSN Register (*the most
complete reference source for the identification of serial publications*)
at http://portal.issn.org wishes to *contribute a subset of its
bibliographic database to Wikidata*.
This consists of (approximately) *1.100.000 serial publications notices*
(only current/not discontinued publications), with 10% having 2 or more
ISSNs (typically, paper and electronic version). Currently, Wikidata
contains approximately 94000 ISSN values.
Each serial notice is described with metadata from the set of metadata
already freely available from the ISSN Portal :
- ISSN identifier
- ISSN-L identifier (the ISSN-L identifies the serial publication
independantly of its medium, while distinct ISSNs are assigned to each
medium)
- Proper (original) title of the serial
- Key (unambiguous) title of the serial
- Country of publication
- Distribution format (of a given ISSN)
- URL (for online publications)
- Language of the serial
*(Note that the publisher is not part of the free data).*
More information can be read in this presentation.
<https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1vJrfj3zOKTw-29QYp2RyBxkJUlHVk_VKWzn…>
Preliminary analysis has been conducted and a data model proposal to
capture this set of metadata has been submitted at
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata_talk:WikiProject_Periodicals#Data_do…
(Wikidata Periodicals and Wiki Source Projects have been notified)
Feedback on this is welcome until 4th of december (although not a formal
deadline), either here or on wiki at the link above.
We also welcome general advice on how to proceed with an ingest of this
size (the plan is currently to use OpenRefine to reconcile and import).
Best Regards
Thomas

Website: https://www.um.org/umap2020/
============================
Abstracts due: January 31, 2020 (mandatory)
Papers due: February 7, 2020
============================
BACKGROUND AND SCOPE:
============================
ACM UMAP – User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization – is the premier
international conference for researchers and practitioners working on
systems that adapt to individual users or to groups of users, and that
collect, represent, and model user information. ACM UMAP is sponsored by
ACM SIGCHI and SIGWEB, and organized with User Modeling Inc. as the core
Steering Committee, extended with past years’ chairs. The proceedings are
published by ACM and will be part of the ACM Digital Library.
ACM UMAP covers a wide variety of research areas where personalization and
adaptation may be applied. This includes a number of domains in which
researchers are engendering significant innovations based on advances in
user modeling and adaptation, recommender systems, adaptive educational
systems, intelligent user interfaces, e-commerce, advertising, digital
humanities, social networks, personalized health, entertainment, and many
more.
We welcome submissions related to user modeling, personalization and
adaptation in any area; the conference web site provides a detailed (but
not proscriptive) list of topics and sub-topics of importance to the
conference. As the theme for UMAP 2020 is “Responsible Personalization,”
submissions in all areas that emphasize ethical dimensions of personalized
systems are welcome.
CONFERENCE TOPICS:
============================
For details, see the conference website (https://www.um.org/umap2020/)
* Personalized Recommender Systems
* Adaptive Hypermedia and the Semantic Web
* Intelligent User Interfaces
* Personalized Social Web
* Technology-Enhanced Adaptive Learning
* Privacy, Fairness, and Transparency
* Personalized Health

SUBMISSION AND REVIEW PROCESS
============================
Papers will be submitted through EasyChair:
https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=acmumap2020
Long (8 pages + references) and Short (4 pages + references) papers in ACM
style. Original research papers addressing the theory and/or practice of
UMAP, and papers showcasing innovative use of UMAP and exploring the
benefits and challenges of applying UMAP technology in real-life
applications and contexts are welcome.
Long papers should present original reports of substantive new research
techniques, findings, and applications of UMAP. They should place the work
within the field and clearly indicate its innovative aspects. Research
procedures and technical methods should be presented in sufficient detail
to ensure scrutiny and reproducibility. Results should be clearly
communicated and implications of the contributions/findings for UMAP and
beyond should be explicitly discussed.
Short papers should present original and highly promising research or
applications. Merit will be assessed in terms of originality and importance
rather than maturity, extensive technical validation, and user studies.
Separation of long and short papers will be strictly enforced so papers
will not compete across categories, but only within each category. Papers
that receive high scores and are considered promising by reviewers, but
didn’t make the acceptance cut may be revised and resubmitted as posters.
Papers must be formatted using the ACM SIG Standard (SIGCONF) proceedings
template: https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template.
All accepted papers will be published by ACM and will be available via the
ACM Digital Library. To be included in the Proceedings, at least one author
of each accepted paper must register for the conference and present the
paper there. Student registration fee is allowed to students who present a
student paper.
