That would actually be a great idea. If mediawiki supported urls
something like [[Special:Template/Cool|Alphabet|Grandplan|NamedParam=Amazing]]
which would produce the same output as
{{Cool|Alphabet|Grandplan|NamedParam=Amazing}} but on a standalone
page then I feel that could have a lot of uses.
Another related idea would be to allow the &preload= parameter to have
variable substitution - that way creating page content remotely could
also be made easier.
Yours, hoping someone else has the time to do this.

I guess it is a good idea to contact user
Beetstra on the English wikipedia. He has been busy in the past with writing a plugin for
mediawiki for this task. It seemed a hard job to implement such a thing practically in
mediawiki. I do not know the current state of his project, but you may want to ask him (if
there is not a direct chance that it will be implemented and included in mediawiki, I
guess that the code could be relatively easy converted to a toolserver tool)
In fact, I think it would be easy to generalize this into a system where
you can pair any page (template) with any parameter; that could even be
used to replace Special:BookSources . I already have something similar.

Subject: [Toolserver-l] Simple Geohack-like tool for CAS numbers
Hello,
CAS numbers are used to identify chemical compounds [1]. Someone on
fr.wp has created a template for CAS numbers; it uses the CAS number
as a parameter and outputs some links to several resources/databases
[2]. The thing is, although these links might be useful, the articles
aren't really the good place for them.
I was wondering if someone from this list would be willing to write a
simple tool on the toolserver à la GeoHack. The tool would do exactly
what the template is doing right now, i.e. it would check the validity
of the input and would output a few links [3]. The template would then
be modified to simply link to this tool.
This should be pretty easy (I think) and it would avoid displaying all
these links inside the articles. Anyone interested?
Many thanks in advance.

CAS" in the infobox and click on the [+] symbol to expand the
template.
