Hi Sandra

Thanks for pointing this out! And you are right, of course. That statement is debatable.

The campaign is not ours and I don't necessarily agree with all of it. But I think your message actually proves one important point that the campaign tries to make: without harmonized copyright European citizens are uncertain about what they can or cannot use.

And that's what is problematic from a perspective of free knowledge and online collaboration. That's why I shared the link to the campaign on this list. I am happy you are weighing in on this important topic.

Best,
Jan

Hi Jan,

Re. your statement: "It turns out that the original Dutch version is in the public domain in Poland -- but not in the Netherlands"

This may be premature. It all depends on whether you accept the claim that Otto Frank has copyright over  Anne Frank’s diary.
As I stated on the communia-blog: that claim has not yet been upheld by any court and is considered invalid by several experts on the writings of Anne Frank.

I am not sure whether this campaign - however sympathetic its cause - helps ensure that Anne Frank's diary remains firmly in the public domain, as it appears to take these claims for granted,

Also: the text of the diary has been available from this (French?) website since January 1.

Hi Jan,

yes, this topic also had a lot of attention from Wikimedia Nederland before (Although I believe we're not involved with this particular project). I cc'd Sandra and Jos who are more involved with it.

Best,
Lodewijk

Hi all

Today WIPO celebrates World Intellectual Property Day and I just wanted to bring to your attention a campaign by Communia, Kennisland, and Centrum Cyfrowe: the three organizations have been looking into the copyright status of Anne Frank's diary in Europe. It turns out that the original Dutch version is in the public domain in Poland -- but not in the Netherlands.

Find more info about the #readannediary campaign that calls for shorter, harmonized copyright terms here.

Best,
Jan
