Hello I have been looking for different projects for contributing to wiki community better during the this upcoming summer of code and came across Bug:57805 which could produce a significant difference in user interaction with mediawiki commons ....please go through a rough proposal i prepared explaining my aim to the project .....this idea implements lightbox interface

Hello everyone,
After serving as product manager at Wikimedia Foundation for the past two years, I am now looking to transition into a leadership role focused on community and people management.
I have discussed this goal with Erik and Howie, and they have invited me to apply for the new position of Director of Community Engagement (Product) (1).
I look forward to interviewing for that job, to help build a stronger partnership between our community and product teams. I am also very interested in developing effective governance tools that involve all our users -- and in working on other strategic projects that can enable positive change in our movement.
While I really enjoy my current work with the multimedia team, it’s likely to become increasingly technical in nature in the next few years, and a community engagement role seems like a better fit for my skills and experience (2). I realize this new opening is a competitive search, and I'm prepared to explore other opportunities at WMF and beyond if I'm not selected for this job.
During this transition, I will work with Howie to recruit my successor, and will continue to serve as multimedia product manager until we hire that person. If you know anyone that would be well suited for this role, please contact us. A job description will be posted in the next few days.
I am glad to report that we now have a world-class multimedia team (3), with a clear vision for the coming years. I am confident that our team will be successful in meeting its goals, now that it is fully staffed and up to speed. And I can't wait to release Media Viewer, our new immersive multimedia browser, later this quarter.
I am also proud of all that we accomplished with other teams during my two-year tenure as a product manager. Notifications are now helping millions of users stay informed and work more effectively. Our Thanks tool is used widely to share positive feedback throughout our community. Beta Features now lets us test new software long before it's released. And we've learned important lessons from our Page Curation and Article Feedback experiments. Lastly, our new Roundtables program is helping us collaborate productively with our community to plan and develop new products (4).
I'd like to thank all of our community and team members who helped make these projects possible, and look forward to many more collaborations with you in coming years.

Interesting: you have to read the new description of Project X at VOX
Media. Reads like a parallel to what the multimedia effort wants to do. The
way I see it, the more people experimenting in this space, the better.

Its been over a month since I have started contributing to Wikimedia mostly
to MultimediaViewer extension. I have thoroughly gone through its code.
I saw a couple of days ago aims for multimediaviewer for 2016, so I was
hoping you can guide me that what can I can take up as GSoC project this
year so that its long enough to a span of 3 months work.
I planning to add a list of features to multimediaviewer. Kindly, someone
guide me through it and if I get a mentor from within all of you, it would
be really nice.

I need to use slideshow feature of Extension:Multimediaviewer for development purpose but the one for mediawiki 1.22 does not support slideshow i tried to include latest development version in mediiawiki 1.22.1-0but it doesn't seem to work can anyone please guide me how to make slideshow work in this version of mediawiki for debugging purpose.

Random thought -- I don't know why this hadn't occurred to me earlier --
but are there Wikimedia people who would be interested in coming to
Libre Graphics Meeting? Obviously you deal a lot more with the
publishing side of things, while (historically) LGM has been focused on
content-creation tools like Blender and GIMP.... But if there are
Wikipedians who would be in the area, they might find LGM helpful for
content-publishing stuff as well; in particular there are a lot of font
and typography talks in recent years, thanks to CSS @font-face. For
that matter, there is typically a lot of W3C and CC-licensing content in
the mix as well. It's not just the app-development teams that make the
event work; one of the best parts is getting the developers face-to-face
time with the people using their stuff on a daily basis.
Anyway, to the point: LGM this year is going to be April 2 to 5 in
Leipzig, Germany. The site is at http://libregraphicsmeeting.org/2014/
.... If there are interested people nearby, we'd love to have them join
us. Attendance is free; we try to underwrite travel costs for open
source developers who attend (which we would also love to see Wikimedia
take an interest in, of course :) -- tell your friends about the
"donate" link!). But really I'm more interested in making sure we
spread the word. If you use or build free creative-graphics software,
there's something for you at LGM.
Think there'd be interest? Or do you know someone in the organization
who might find it up their alley?

I am glad that our first user stories resonate with you. They intentionally focus on ways that our community may interact through multimedia -- and we view these types of productive collaborations between different user groups as a key objective for our work.
We really appreciate your thoughtful blog post about this vision (2) and fully agree with you that more user stories will be needed to illustrate the scope of possible interactions between different communities around the world -- from schools to professional or personal sites around the world. We aim to identify more user stories like these to inform our next steps.
We are actively working with Lydia, Daniel and the Wikidata team to implement structured data on Commons and integrate it with Wikidata later this year, in collaboration with our community. We expect this work will improve a range of multimedia workflows as a result, from curation to search and beyond. We will definitely address the points you raise.
I would also like to thank all the community members who have joined our discussion about this multimedia vision (3). We are grateful for your feedback, and very glad to see a partnership develop between our community and the foundation around these goals, so we may better serve our users together.
