Subject: [African Wikimedians] LD4 Wikidata Affinity Group: Summer/Fall
Wikidata Working Hour Series Third Session September 15th!
To: <african-wikimedians(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Greetings, everyone –
Over the summer and into the fall the LD4 Wikidata Affinity Group
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_LD4_Wikidata_Affinity_Gr…>
will be offering a series of Wikidata Working Hours
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_LD4_Wikidata_Affinity_Gr…>
to give folks an opportunity to try out various Wikidata-related skills and
tools by assembling a data set of diverse library and information science
(LIS) materials (articles, conference proceedings, books) and adding it to
Wikidata. Wikidata Working Hours provide hands-on Wikidata experience in a
supportive space. We hope you will join us if you are interested in
learning more about Wikidata, exploring LIS literature, and have been
looking for a fun Wikidata project to contribute to.
The third Wikidata Working Hour in the series will cover adding the books
from our bibliography of diverse LIS resources
<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1YZjaD5l9hZPLiGRx6oqS7-dwy_d3M3-FDtJ…>that
we created in our 1st session to Wikidata as both works and editions. We
will learn how to use Zotero, the reference management software, and
its browser
plugin <https://www.zotero.org/download/connectors> to automatically
extract metadata for articles and convert them to a Wikidata format that
can be batch uploaded using QuickStatements.
To get a sneak preview of what we will be doing, you can learn more about
the Wikidata & Zotero link here:
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Zotero.

Subsequent Working Hours will cover webscraping for data in the PAWS
environment, adding authors and publishers manually into Wikidata, batch
editing using OpenRefine, batch editing using the LINCS tool, using the
Author Disambiguator tool, and analyzing and visualizing data with SPARQL
and Scholia.
This session will be recorded and the recording shared on the event page.
