We're doing an outreach effort to Oceania, with an early focus on
Micronesia. Details can be found at
http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Outreach_Oceania . We have an itinerary
set and airfare paid for. We've talked to local colleges and we'll be going
there as our primary form of outreach. We're intending to do secondary
outreach to local GLAMs. We'll be going to Majuro in the Marshall Islands,
and Kosrae and Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia from January 27
to February 16.
We'd be really keen to have another Australian, some one from the GLAM
sector or some one with education experience attend and participate in these
outreach efforts. Ideally, we'd like some one is keen to help and who can
be self funding in terms of airfare and help with some of the lodging costs
(round trip airfare costs between $1,500 and $2,300 from Cairns) or some one
has a specialised skill set that would be really beneficial for us to have
along when we make a funding pitch to WMF. (One of our participants is
American. Hence, funding sought there. The other two are myself and
User:Hawkeye7.) If you've teaching experience, conducted wiki workshops,
have experience working with GLAMs, that would be really great.
It is a big ask, but if you have the time, going along would be really
great. The islands we're visiting have small populations of between 2,700
and 25,000, so there is a great opportunity to make a big impact. :) If

You might be interested to know that Wikimedia UK has lent its support to a
bid led by a researcher at University of Birmingham, supported by Oxford
University and also the Imperial War Museum, for a project funded by JISC to
categorise and prioritise the UK's cultural heritage related to World War
I.(1)
This isn't a partnership per se though it may well lead to one. The only
commitment we have made is to write a letter and go to a meeting, and the
outcomes will be very long-term. However I think it's significant because
1) It is good recognition that the Wikimedia movement is a stakeholder in
the development of heritage and educational resources. (The phone call when
someone from Oxford was saying "we really think your support would add
weight to what we're doing" was, erm, interesting)
2) It gives us as an organisation formal access to a strong network of
world-leading institutions focusing on this particular task
3) It's also relatively unusual for a Wikimedia organisation to provide
support to someone else to apply for third-party funding in a competitive
tendering process, but in this case the Wikimedia UK board thought it was
quite justified in pursuit of our objectives.
This should help us build up our network of institutional partners,
particularly (but not exclusively) aimed at the World War I centenary, and
help lay the groundwork for some exciting collaboration work in the future.

The scholarship is just for "post secondary students". This year it is
restricted to Canadian but as the numbers have not been as good as hoped
(still a few months to go). Will be looking at offering this globally next
year.
I will be lecturing on Wikipedia next month in India and Nepal at two
medical school their. I will let you know how it goes. They have managed to
find a computer lab with 10 computers in New Delhi thus after the lectures
which will be open to all we will be having a hands on session limited to 20
people. It supposedly filled up the day it was announced.

I subscribed to that mailing list since its beginning, but didn't get
involved in it yet. I've just checked about all the previous messages ;-)
I am a French wikipedian, and would like to tell you about a pretty old
project: a wiki encyclopedia designed for children.
It seems that this list mainly focus on Wikipedia-editing in higher
education and to a lesser extent, offline content from Wikipedia for
children, with the "Wikipedia for Schools" selection.
However, I noticed this message:

The idea of a equivalent of Wikipedia for children was discussed in
particular in 2005-2006 on this page :

Although it had no continuation as a Wikimedia project, wikis with such
a feature were launched first in Dutch: WikiKids

later: Vikidia <http://fr.vikidia.org/> (article on Wikipedia
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vikidia>) and then in Spanish Vikidia in
spanish <http://es.vikidia.org/>. I opened Vikidia.
WikiKids and Vikidia in French are doing well and are quite alike in
size and activity, whereas Vikidia in Spanish doesn't make it so well.
On Vikidia in French, we currently have a guest-book opened, and the
comments left on it

encouraging.
Children say they appreciate the article to be more readable for them
than on Wikipedia, their main reserve being that some article are not
developed enough, or that there isn't articles on every subject they

substantial content, though it has to be easier than the wikipedia's
content.
We have yet a bit more than 10 000 articles in Vikidia in French, and
about 220 000 unique visitors a month.
This "Wikikids" question was mentioned again in the Wikimedia scope one

Another feature of WikiKids/Vikidia is of course that it let children be
involved in building the content, and does not "only" aim to produce and
offer content for children, for the same benefits that you can find in
Wikipedia-editing workshops for students. There is both some school
projects and volunteer children editing on Vikidia along with teenagers,
students and adult writers.
My question is of course: */why is there no equivalent in English yet

Hi folks,
I would like to announce a cooperation between Wikipedia and International
School of Prague (ISP)[1] which starts now. Czech Wikipedians had already
visited three times ISP. On first two sessions we had agreed that there is a
will to get Wikipedia to ISP and go for a long term cooperation based on
creation of the new article and further understanding of this web resource.
Third meeting held today and it was traing of teachers and answering their
questions. We will continue with this training and we will start to work on
getting Wikipedia to teacher's syllabus on the next meetings. You can see
the development via the project page (pages News and Feedback).[2]
